ABSTRACT

How do young Norwegians talk about children? With increasing age of parents at first birth, one of the highest fertility rates in Europe but also a boost in childlessness among men, the issue begs to be explored. More Norwegians live without children up to their thirties; they spend much time with friends and defer having children until women approach the biological limit. Men do not meet the same limit. I shall examine how men of different classes perceive children, compare this to women’s attitudes and reflect on the implications of this situation for fertility.
