ABSTRACT

Once a director has thoroughly analyzed the screenplay for dramatic and narrative integrity, their work has only just begun. A director is a Storyteller whose medium is not the screenplay, but the screen. The visual compositions, performances, lighting, sound, setting, and the juxtaposition of images are the director’s tools and means of expression. The tonal and stylistic designs latent in the screenplay start taking shape as soon as you can separate the interlocking aspects of lm discourse, and give each a functional name. This section, along with Part 5, will help equip your cinematic storytelling toolbox so you can make the successful transition from script to screen.
