ABSTRACT

The innate realism of photography makes us expect psychological realism from lm actors, so you’ll need to understand the craft of acting, and even become something of a drama coach. Communicating with actors in an inspiring and productive way is at the core of directing and will become your lifetime’s work. You will need a little acting under your belt to do this well. Acting is a well-understood craft, and what follows is a brief primer that I hope will launch you into acting and reading books about it by the master teachers (listed at the chapter end). It’s usual to face a cast with different acting methods and even a mixed cast of trained and untrained talent. Here we will look at the concepts and vocabulary most familiar to trained actors, and this you will use to lead those untrained.
