ABSTRACT

This chapter is intended as an introduction to how assessments can be created and used to understand learning outcomes (including those for 21st-century skills), to assist with the development of appropriate teaching strategies. Thus, it is written for those wishing to learn about developing assessments, but also outlines how assessments should be used to understand and improve learning outcomes. It outlines key principles and considerations needed for designing, developing and validating assessment instruments; as well as methodology for linking assessment data with appropriate teaching strategies. Assessment design is an important, and relatively neglected, aspect of the design of technology-based systems for learning. Implications for technology design are discussed in the final sections of the chapter.
