ABSTRACT

On the cover of his book, The Other Malaysia: Writings on Malaysia’s Subaltern History, Farish Noor placed his photograph of a well-fed Malaysian in his 20s, holding a large McDonald’s drink and wearing a T-shirt with an iconic image of Osama bin Laden, while leaning against an equally iconic sign depicting RonaldMcDonald. Ronald appears to be bending at the waste, his torso advancing diagonally out toward the camera, dynamically presenting McDonald’s latest offer, a toy stage set of ‘Beauty and The Beast’.1 The man momentarily rests in front of the sign, right arm languidly leaning over its projecting structure.
