ABSTRACT

The informal reading inventory (IRI), qualitative analysis, or miscue analysis, and the running record are three excellent informal assessment devices. The IRI is useful for grouping decisions and placing students in appropriate materials. Using the qualitative analysis provides insight into the student's reading processes and, possibly, reading needs. And a running record provides verification of the appropriateness of the materials being used in the classroom. All three assessment techniques play an important role in classroom decision making.
