ABSTRACT
A historical area of circulation and encounters of people and ideas, the Indian Ocean is a space where local social stratifi cations and colonialism have established hierarchical systems upon individuals. During the last two centuries, Europe played an important role in redefi ning its places and people. Yet, as always and everywhere, human life in this part of the world has been made of adjustments to situations and continuous negotiations of reality.
