ABSTRACT

At the conclusion of this book, we would like to leave the reader with a few final thoughts. In this volume, international context as it relates to gender has been a main theme. However, authors conducted this exploration for the most part without having access to the proposed contextual paradigm for navigating the gender road on the personal, cultural or international levels. As editors, we wrote the introductory chapter at the same time others were working on their contributions. So the ensuing chapters focused upon context in varying implicit and explicit degrees. If we stay with the gender road metaphor, each contributor started at their own unique point of reference when discussing contextual issues as they applied to the psychology of men and masculinity. In essence, we initially lacked a common starting point for our journey. If we take this collection of works as the first attempt at giving definition to context on the various levels of interest (i.e., individual, cultural) while using an international lens, we are curious what will come next. We attempt to look forward, wondering about the future of contextual analysis in studying the psychology of men. If others were to do an extension of this type of book and make context the cornerstone upon which it is built, we might expect those works to address themes in their own unique fashion, while perhaps retaining some of the noitons proposed here. Chief among these would be the potential— and, we argue, the need—for a growing common lexicon regarding contexual matters.
