ABSTRACT

UK government policy and legislation has been especially concerned with young people at risk of social exclusion sometimes known as the NEET group (Not in Education, Employment, or Training; e.g., Berthoud, 2003; Gilligan, 2000; Raffe, Brannen, & Croxford, 2001). This chapter reports on a project in Scotland which deployed key workers to support young people who had recently left school and were at risk of social exclusion, aiming to enhance independence, self-suffi ciency, and employability. The youngsters were exceptional and vulnerable in the sense that many had a variety of special needs, while others were involved with drugs or the criminal justice system.
