ABSTRACT

In the United States, the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) has continued to develop and its popularity as a treatment for infertility has continued to grow. More frequently, insurance plans now cover at least part of the cost of such treatments. There are now hundreds of ART clinics that are members of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, the umbrella organization that provides voluntary guidelines and loose oversight to the infertility industry. In the last twenty years, medicine has made some remarkable accomplishments in the field of reproductive technology. When used successfully, these technologies provide the miracle of life for couples, who have often spent years trying to have a child and have exhausted all other avenues for conceiving a child of their own. But these techniques raise significant moral questions and can create thorny legal dilemmas that must be resolved in court.
