ABSTRACT
This chapter contrasts the ways in which undocumented immigrant women are constructed by and through French media and legal discourses to the ways in which some immigrant women narrate themselves in the context of the sans-papiers movement. The chapter opens with a discussion of discursive processes that place these women under erasure. It then moves on to show how legal narratives as well as legal/social practices in France are locating and locking some immigrant women into ‘domestic’ and ‘traditional’ roles within French society. The chapter ends with a discussion of four women’s narratives, which offer provocative critiques of current French administrative and legal practices.
