Criminal women have been a central concern for prison managers and medical and psychiatric professionals since the emergence of the modern prison system at the end of the eighteenth century. They have been studied, probed and tested not only because of their supposed uniqueness but also because of the threat they posed to the social order of stable family relationships … And at the centre of this iron therapy stood the figure of the medical man.
