ABSTRACT
Asparagus officinalis, a monocot which belongs to the family of Asparagaceae, is an important crop plant and is considered to be one of the most refined vegetables. It originated from the Mediterranean area and was known to Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. At present, several varieties of asparagus are cultivated world-wide, particularly in mild and sunny climates to which the plant is expecially well adapted.
