Introduction The transformation of Singapore from an entrepot economy verging on a monopoly into a modern diversified economy has been nothing short of dramatic. In a relatively short span of 30 or so years, the economy has broadened and deepened and the per capita income has come to rival some of the most advanced economies in the world.1
