ABSTRACT

Pesticides are mainly controlled through the Food and Environmental Protection Act 1985.81 This protects human and plant health and the environment. It aims to secure a safe and efficient means of controlling pesticides, as well as making information about pesticides publicly available. The Act states that no pesticide can be made, imported, sold, supplied, stored used or advertised without approval. Enforcement powers include powers of seizure, disposal and remedial action by MAFF. Buffer zones have been introduced to protect water82 and fields,83 margins. MAFF also monitors pesticide levels84 and random samples may be taken. There are a number of codes of practice for sellers and users. The Pesticide Forum85 brings together agro-chemical, farming, retailing, environmental and consumer interests.86 Plant protection products are approved by the Pesticide Safety Directorate (part of MAFF). Future regulations will apply to biocidal products.87
