ABSTRACT

A ‘foundation’ suggests a beginning: that which makes possible what follows and upon which what follows can be securely based. It is therefore a crucial, determining, beginning. It involves selection, choice, and therefore necessarily excludes as much as it includes, refuses as much as makes possible. ‘Foundational subjects’ suggest fully constituted subjects; clearly recognisable, describable, integrated and defined. Constituted as complete. Not only visible but knowable. Knowable as what they are and what they are not.
