ABSTRACT

For this concluding chapter, Phil Race suggested that I try to predict the range of duties of a teacher in higher education in the year 2020. I wouldn't know where to start, I’m afraid – but it does occur to me that the nature of the job will depend crucially on how the profession as an international community responds to some of the burning issues of today. So, in this last chapter, I would like to make some observations on a number of major current developments of global extent, which are important in university education and which our profession needs to address with some urgency and unity. These developments are:

moves to measure and reward teaching;

demands for greater efficiency;

the overloading of courses and degree programmes;

the impact of new technology;

the nature of university management and governance.
