ABSTRACT
The opening quotation is taken from a real time transcript of a focus group that was conducted to ascertain the nature of court room experiences for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. A multitude of concerns about obtaining a fair judicial process for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are captured within the text of this short quotation. Concerns such as
these gave rise to the project undertaken by the American Judicature Society to improve access to the courts for deaf and hard of hearing people.3
