ABSTRACT

This chapter examines changes in the social construction of male sex work in Santo Domingo over the past three decades. During this period, the population of the capital city of the Dominican Republic has grown from half a million to more than two million people. Vertical mobility and social anonymity have increased dramatically as a result of modernization, and poverty and unemployment have grown enormously. These factors, together with more lenient sexual attitudes, have created a favourable milieu for the development of male sex work. In this chapter we will look at the impact of HIV/ AIDS on male sex work in Santo Domingo.
