ABSTRACT
Analyses of family dynamics have primarily relied on retrospective marital, cohabitation and birth histories. Any recent issue of Demography or Population Studies provides examples. These data contain a sequence of dates of events and often some ‘background’ variables, many of which are measured at the end, rather than the beginning, of the history. The methods of event history (survival) analysis are applied to these data, with varying levels of model sophistication.
