ABSTRACT

Liang Qichao (Liang Ch’i-ch’ao, 1873-1929), scholar, reformer, and journalist, is also known by other names: Zhuoru, Renfu, and Rengong. His views on China’s modernization occupy a place of central importance in modern Chinese history. His essays and scholarly monographs are contained in his collected work, Yin binshi heji, published in 1936; a biography, chronologically arranged, Liang Qichao nianpu changpian, is exceptionally valuable because of its extensive use of the otherwise unavailable correspondence to and from Liang. Of the major studies of Liang Qichao, those by Chang Hao and Xiao Gongquan (Gongquan) offer particularly useful discussions of Liang’s views on various subjects.
