ABSTRACT
The European Values Systems Study Group (EVSSG), whose surveys produced the data on which our analysis is based, was initially mooted just prior to the first elections to the European Parliament. Given the processes of economic, political and cultural transnationalization that might result, it was thought important to discover whether the emerging concept of a European cultural identity had an empirical base.
