ABSTRACT

In this chapter our aim is to outline a research strategy that we developed in order to investigate residential land prices in three Mexican cities for the period 1974-90.1 In the light of price trends observed, we also examine the relative affordability of land acquisition by lower-income groups since the late 1970s. This represents one important dimension of the major research project upon which we have been engaged since 1989 (Ward 1989b, see note 1). Elsewhere in this volume we have included separate discussions relating to other dimensions, namely the rôle of principal landdevelopment actors in creating segmented land markets (Ch. 7), and the valorization impact of public policy on land prices, making use of what we have termed “snapshot” analysis (Ch. 15).
