ABSTRACT

The potential for addressing the individual needs of children is boundless in art. From the moment children can hold a mark-making tool they enjoy mapping the movements of their hands and arms and will do so enthusiastically on any available surface, as every parent knows. From this they progress to storytelling through increasingly sophisticated scribbles from which patterns of symbols or schema start to emerge. Through these, young children make sense of their surroundings and begin to convey meaning. Imagine a 5-6-year-old’s drawing of a house to conjure up an immediate mind’s eye picture of the symbols used to depict roof, door, windows, sun, etc.
