ABSTRACT

About the changes in the editing process, which is now almost entirely digital and nonlinear, Wise says, “Editing is easier on the AVID (as opposed to actually cutting film).” She doesn’t believe there are any limitations when editing dance on a nonlinear system. “There really aren’t, because you don’t have to reconstitute shots, you can get right back to the dailies with the click of a mouse. You can ‘gang’ two shots: take one angle that’s in your record side and another angle on the other side, ‘gang’ the two together and roll them together and see a nice edit.” And it is so easy to replace shots. “If somebody’s doing a spin, for example, and their hand goes across their face at a certain point and you want to use a different take, and that point is crucial, just line up the two takes at that point, click ‘replace,’ and it’s done. To me the AVID is an editor’s dream come true, but that’s not what I said when I first heard of computer editing-which is unprintable.”
