ABSTRACT

Within schools the impact of HIV/AIDS on what is talked about in the area of sex has been significant. Teachers and their pupils have begun to discuss issues and practices which only five years ago would not have been acceptable topics of pedagogic discourse. Inevitably, such increased openness has provoked concern in some quarters, and debate continues regarding such issues as the proper aims of HIV/AIDS education for young people; the range of issues which should be examined; the language which should be used to discuss sexual activities; the age at which issues to do with HIV/AIDS should be introduced into the secondary curriculum; whether and how the topic should be addressed within junior schools (see Farquhar, Ch. 13, this volume); the best teaching methods to use and so on.
