ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine social antecedents of commitment. Social antecedents include organizational justice, trust, politics, and relationships with coworkers, team, leader, and organization. We have narrowed our focus by examining three antecedents that are based on social exchange theory, consisting of leader-member exchange (LMX), perceived organizational support (POS), and psychological contract (PC) theory. Compared to the other chapters in this section, our focus is on specic relationships as antecedents of commitment rather than individual (chapter 7), organizational (chapter 9), or cultural characteristics (chapter 10). For example, we examine how the employee-organization relationship in terms of POS impacts employee commitment rather than separately examining characteristics of the employee or characteristics of the organization, which is the focus of chapters 7 and 9, respectively.
