ABSTRACT

Neil kinnock was Leader for nine years. Tony Blair if he retires in 2007 will have been Leader for at least 13 years. Harold Wilson was Leader for 12 years. Clem Attlee was Leader for 20 years. Arthur Henderson was in very senior positions of leadership from 1908 to 1932, 24 years out of his 32 years as a Member of Parliament. If the Labour Party ‘owes more to Methodism than Marx’, Arthur Henderson must claim much of the credit or blame! He was MP for Barnard Castle from 1903 to 1918, winning a famous by-election by 47 votes. During the campaign, ‘Barney’ was besieged by the national press for the first – and probably the last – time in its political history.
