ABSTRACT

The chapters in Part 3 illustrate the everyday settings in which women in Chiapas struggle for their own and others’ fuller participation in the political affairs of their communities, the state, the nation, and the world. Women’s activism takes various forms—from serving in civilian support bases for the EZLN to participating in cooperatives, church groups, political parties, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Yet, it is important to bear in mind that women’s organizing did not begin with the Zapatista uprising. From the colonial period to the present day, women have played important roles in rebellions and nonviolent protests against Spanish and mestizo domination.
