ABSTRACT

The history of some indigenous organizations is also the history of those who accompany them in the course of their growth. In the following pages I narrate the history of J’pas Joloviletik and Jolom Mayaetik—artisan cooperatives of highlands Chiapas—and K’inal Antzetik—a nongovernmental organization comprised of indigenous women and mestizas who advise women artisans. Starting with my own experience as a consultant to two cooperatives and as coordinator of K’inal Antzetik, I share moments of our respective histories, and reveal the scope, limitations, risks, and challenges of the organizational process of women of highland Chiapas. 1
