ABSTRACT

There is a long history of graphics calculator use in schools and colleges in the United Kingdom. Generally, this technology has been used with older or higher attaining students in Key Stages 4 and 5, rather than low attaining students of any age. The introduction of the Key Stage 3 Strategy for mathematics in September 2001 has led to increased interest in the use of graphics calculators with younger pupils, and there has also been recent small-scale activity where teachers have been using this technology with pupils in Years 5 and 6. However, it is likely that this technology is still largely used only with higher attaining students. The contention here is that there is much for low attaining pupils to gain from using graphics calculators, and that this technology can help to support the learning of these pupils.
