ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a project, Curiosity Kits, aimed at encouraging reluctant, mainly boy readers to read at home with other family members. The project has been successful in generating enthusiasm for reading and involving a wider range of family members in the reading that children bring from school. Particularly interesting has been the way children have been able to mix play with reading information texts. However, the question is raised as to how much room there is within the curriculum for playful encounters with text and even whether children see this as valuable.
