These conjunctions are called coordinating conjunctions, because all the parts they link together have the same status in the sentence. In my example, ‘cunning’, ‘wily’ and ‘sly’ are all adjectives. It would be possible of course to miss out one or even both of the ‘ands’:

The two ‘ands’ are another example of an author making syntax serve her meaning: it seems to me that she is piling up the cat’s character traits in a very deliberate and emphatic way.
