ABSTRACT

The terms ‘Study Support’ and ‘Out-of-School Hours Learning’ are synonymous and will be used interchangeably throughout this chapter. My own preferred term is the latter as it includes that key word ‘learning’ but Study Support is shorter and snappier. In addition, there are those who still think the term ‘Study Support’ relates only to academically based activities such as Homework Clubs, Study Clubs and revision sessions and this is not the case. In 1998 the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) published Extending Opportunity: A National Framework for Study Support which opens with the following definition:

12 C H A P T E R

This definition accepts and supports the width of activities and clearly expects schools to look beyond the ‘Homework Club’. This breadth and range are made explicit by Education Extra:

This definition is particularly useful in that it specifies the times at which such activities may take place, thus encouraging schools to be flexible in their approach to meet the needs of the children.
