ABSTRACT

This chapter argues for connections between body and mind and the need to return to the exploration of a wide vision of literacy and what it is to be literate. It is time to examine the effect of a prescriptive curriculum that is heavily focused on raising standards in reading, writing and maths. Although the desire to raise standards in key areas is commendable, it is necessary to question if such a narrow view of what it is to be literate is really offering our children a truly broad and balanced curriculum. A wider vision of literacy, one that places creativity, imagination and innovative thinking at the heart of every teaching and learning experience, will once again empower teachers and children to consider exciting new possibilities.
