ABSTRACT

Despite the strong belief that more money and material possessions would improve our lives considerably, it seems that those with a strong materialistic value orientation actually end up less satisfied, less happy, and with more psychological problems. However, this link is more complex than previously assumed, and we present new research from various European countries that extends what we know by showing that:

• Materialistic values are linked to lower well-being when there is conflict within a person’s value system.
