ABSTRACT

Return to work is considered one of the most important variables of patients’ psychosocial outcome after brain injury.(1-3) Studies investigating employment outcome generally revealed a high unemployment rate, ranging between 50 and 78%, that can persist a long time post-injury.(4-8) The majority of TBI survivors are young adults, hence brain injury results in economic hardship on them and on society. Wehman et al.(9) report a social cost of $71,000/year per person for those who survived after head injury in the USA in 1985, including lost productivity and wages, health maintenance and long-term care.
