ABSTRACT

Financial protection from an injury or illness that restricts a person’s ability to work comes in a variety of forms. At the federal level, Social Security Disability Insurance provides money to individuals who are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment (Social Security Administration, 2003). State-mandated workers’ compensation insurance provides money to workers disabled while in the act of working. Group Disability Insurance is provided by employers for disabilities of short duration (STD). Generally STD coverage lasts up to six months. Many large employers also provide compensation for a disability that is long term (LTD). LTD benefits begin when STD benefits end.
