ABSTRACT
A key attribute of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) is that it is a European level initiative. This chapter provides a summary of the European organisations that are concerned with data and information supply for environment and security policies at European level and which would thus be involved in the GMES, or at least candidates for involvement. The detailed description of these European organisations serves the following three functions:
(1) to understand how these European organisations operate currently in terms of decision-making, information flows and financial arrangements;
(2) to review whether these arrangements might need to be altered for these organisations to become involved in GMES; and
(3) to provide lessons for the development of GMES.
