ABSTRACT

Structure Ultimately, any form of global environmental monitoring will stand or fall on the benefits it brings to the organisations that provide the funds. This chapter explores the potential socio-economic benefits of global environmental monitoring in general, and the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme in particular, by reporting on a research project carried out as part of the initial phase of GMES during the year 2003. This chapter analyses socio-economic benefits through the following six studies:
