ABSTRACT
Introduction One of the main challenges for GMES and other global environmental monitoring programmes lies in securing sustainable funding. While GMES is, at its origin, an initiative concerned with European independence and autonomy in environment monitoring and security, the justification of sustainable funding is a necessary condition for developing an operational GMES. This section discusses the main dimensions of the challenge of sustainable funding.
