As debates concerning regulation of intimate partnerships and family life continue anon, Hardy’s Jude the Obscure – published in 1896 – continues to be a relevant touchstone of pertinent issues. A central topic in current political and legal policy projections is that of marriage versus cohabitation – whether, and to what degree, unmarried partnerships should be supported, as well as regulated by law.
