ABSTRACT

A number of other approaches to understanding cortical and hippocampal function share important similarities with our approach, including for example the use of Hebbian learning and pattern separation (e.g. Alvarez & Squire, 1994; Burgess & O’Keefe, 1996; Hasselmo, 1995; McNaughton & Nadel, 1990; Moll & Miikkulainen, 1997; Touretzky & Redish, 1996; Treves & Rolls, 1994; Wu, Baxter, & Levy, 1996). These other approaches all offer other important principles, many of which would be complementary to those discussed here so that it would be possible to add them to a larger, more complete model.
