ABSTRACT
Language users, with few exceptions, acquire two skills very early in lifehow to comprehend and how to produce spoken utterances. Production, which is the subject matter of this chapter, is less often studied than comprehension, but has long been the object of connectionist modelling. Some production data, such as certain properties of slips of the tongue, are easily explained by connectionist principles. However, as we will see, there are other aspects of production that challenge simple connectionist accounts.
