ABSTRACT

In this era of evidence-based practice, a pressing concern is to determine which psychotherapies work for which clients and under which conditions (see Chapter 21). Research on issues relevant to therapeutic practice and conducted in practice settings has thus become more vital than ever. However, the need for research, which can provide an evidence base for and inform therapeutic practice, can never justify overlooking or downplaying concerns about the welfare and well-being of those who participate in such research. The ethical issues raised by therapeutic research must always be accorded the most serious consideration. This chapter examines some of these issues.
