ABSTRACT
Surveys began in order to answer specific questions which could not be answered by routine service use data such as hospital admission data, outpatient attendance data, local case register data, GP consultation data or mortality data. There is a long history of studies that describe and characterise the psychiatric morbidity seen in the community by standardised assessments.
