ABSTRACT

Of a plethora of publications, her textbook Karst Landforms (1972) and edited volume of benchmark papers Karst Geomorphology (1981) are best known. However, her field research was also groundbreaking in its time, including work relating Yorkshire Dales cave levels to erosion surfaces (Sweeting, 1950) and dissolution rates to limestone lithology (Sweeting &; Sweeting, 1969). In 1977, as travel restrictions began to ease, Marjorie Sweeting was among the first western karstologists to revisit China’s spectacular and varied karst landscapes, where she returned many times. Meeting and working with the country’s leading karst researchers, she facilitated wide study by other western scientists and cave explorers, while also finding time to gather data for her final book-published posthumously in 1995.
