ABSTRACT

The middle reaches of the Hongshui River pass through a huge area of rugged and very spectacular fengcong that constitutes one of the world’s finest karst landscapes (see location map in China entry). Upstream, the Hongshui drains from the less dissected karst of the Guizhou Plateau (at about 1200 m altitude), and downstream it flows into the fenglin karst of the Guangxi lowlands (at 300 m). The heart of the karst, around Qibailong in Dahua County, has been designated a new national park for its magnificent limestone landscapes.
