ABSTRACT
It is 1948, and nine-year-old Elmer Rosewater has been enrolled at a strict Roman Catholic boarding school, St. Stamen’s School for Boys, on the Gulf Coast about an hour’s drive east of New Orleans. In this excerpt, Elmer vividly remembers two lectures by Brother Severance, the religion teacher, who expounds on the Roman Catholic views on atheism and masturbation.
