ABSTRACT

This chapter will outline the behavioural approach to dealing with behaviour disorders in neurologically damaged patients. The behavioural model fits well within an approach to rehabilitation where the intention is to reduce the impact or consequences of impairments, when the impairments themselves cannot be modified (Haffey & Johnston, 1989). This chapter will set the use of behavioural techniques in the context of residual learning ability found in brain-damaged animals and humans, and will briefly describe the applications of such techniques to adults who have sustained a brain injury. In addition, the practical issues of implementing such techniques will be highlighted.
